Tawagin ‘nyo na lang ako sa pangalang: “Doc T”
Ako ay isang dentista at guro sa isa sa mga dental schools dito sa Pilipinas. Bilang isang dentista at guro, naniniwala ako na importante ang mapalaganap ang impormasyon tungkol sa pangangalaga ng ngipin at gilagid para maiwasan ang mga malalang dental conditions.
Batid ko na malaki ang gastos pagpapadentista kaya hangga’t maari ay mabigyan ng agarang lunas ang simpleng sakit ng ngipin bago ito lumala. Pero kadalasan, ang mga pasyente ay nahihiya o nai-intimidate na magtanong sa kanilang mga dentista. Ang iba naman ay namamahalan sa consultation fee pag pupunta sila sa mga dental clinic. Dito, libre ang konsultasyon! 
Alam ko na hindi lahat ng mga problema sa ipin na ikokonsulta sa akin ay magagawan ng paraan at ang website na ito ay hindi pwedeng palitan o i-replace ang aktuwal at personal na konsultasyon sa dentista. Pero sana makatulong ako sa anumang paraan tulad ng dental advice, referrals, atbp.
Nais ko rin na gamitin ang website na ito para tulungan ang mga kapwa ko dentista, lalo na yung mga nagsisimula pa lamang, pati na rin yung mga nag-aaral na aspiring dentists. Sa mga susunod na posts ko ay isasama ko ang mga updates at mga links na makakatulong sa pag-aaral at paglawak ng kaalaman sa dentistry.
Bakit “Tagalog” ang gamit ni Doc T?
Hindi ako nanalo bilang “Binibining Wika” na binibigay tuwing Linggo ng Wika nung estudyante pa lang ako. At lalong hindi 100 ang grado ko sa Filipino.
Napansin ko lang na sa dinami-dami ng websites at blogs na ginawa tungkol sa dentisty in layman’s terms o yung maiintindihan ng mga hindi dentista ay hirap pa rin ang marami na maintindihan ang tamang pag-aalaga ng ngipin at anu-ano ang mga karampatang lunas dito. Sa aking pagsagot sa mga forums kung saan madalas ay Tagalog ang gamit ng mga taong nagkokonsulta tungkol sa mga problema nila sa ngipin, napansin ko na mas naiintindihan nila kapag Tagalog o Taglish ang pagkakapaliwanag ng dentista.

ako po ay nagagalak at natagpuan ko ang blog na ito. alam kong malaki itong tulong sa mga nakakakarami dahil lahat naman at ay mayroon (at nagkaroon) ng ipin.
isa ako sa mga taong “hindi ganoon kaayos” ang ipin dahil aaminin ko ay takot ako magpadentista.

hindi nyo po ata nabanggit kung lalake kayo o babae. wala lang, hindi kasi ako nagpapadentista sa babae kasi masakit ‘pag sa babae. hehe.

Anyway, baligtad naman ang karamihan, mas madaming ayaw sa dentistang lalaki kasi mabigat daw ang kamay ng mga lalaki. But then, meron naman akong kilala na lalaking dentista na magaan ang kamay.
Babae po ako, pero wala pa naman akong nasasaktan na pasyente (at sana wala)

doc t, hanggang anung average na grade ung pwedeng pumasok sa ceu para sa dentistry..kasi kadalasan 85 and above..eh panu kung line of 7..pwede ba un doc t?..
Well, base sa admission requirements, walang specific na nakalagay para sa mga gustong pumasok ng Dentistry. Pero sa Nursing, ang required nila ay GWA na 85, malamang ganun din for Dentistry. Kung line of 7 ang GWA ng applicant, maaring maging “waitlisted” siya o kung desidido siya talagang pumasok sa CEU Dentistry ay pwede siya mag-”appeal.” Dipende sa quota and bilang ng mga naadmit na estudyante kung tatanggapin ang appeal o hindi.
Dear Dr. T,
I have a 4.5 year old son and as per our last visit with a pedia dentist, she recommends a long list of dental procedures (i.e. pulp treatment, extraction, disking, composite with liner, Glass Ionomer) to be undertaken in order to preserve or improve his teeth conditions. However, my husband and I are a bit hesitant whether to do all procedures in one session using IV sedation or 4 sessions under oral sedation. We worry about the possible side effects of sedation to him given that he is still very young. Can you please enlighten me about the advantages and disadvantages of both IV and oral sedation?
Your insights would surely help us decide what sedation to choose.

I understand your hesitation with the sedation procedure. I’ve witnessed several children who undergone the procedure and I know that there were no long-term effects to be worried about. However, all pediatric dentists require a medical clearance from the child’s pediatrician to make sure that the anesthetic and sedative to be used wouldn’t have any conflict with the child’s present condition or medications.
The advantage of sedation (both IV and oral) is that the procedures can be done without the child being aware (or with them being less aware) of it so that’s less trauma to the child.
After sedation (whether oral or IV), the child would experience side effects such as dizziness, disorientation and vomiting. But all these would be short-term lang.
You can still try to do the dental procedures done without sedating the child but the chance of the child getting traumatize and extremely anxious are high. If the child gets traumatize and decides not to go to the dentist anymore, it will be that way until he/she grows up. I know that since I’ve seen adults with severe trauma to dentists. Kawawa lang how their mouth deteriorates.

lately ive been suffering from toothache/pain because of my impacted wisdom tooth, i know i have to undergo surgery/extraction but im a bit hesitant because ive read some experiences that they experience numbness for months, its because the person who performed the surgery damage a nerve in that area…
if you know someone who has a clinic in marikina/san mateo rizal area, kindly recommend.

Donna: Make sure that the dentist who’s going to do the impaction surgery had adequate training. Personally, I would prefer going to someone who had surgical training from reputable institutions like PGH, Metropolitan Hospital and St Jude Hospital. Those institutions have great surgery program so try to observe the clinic for certificates, etc. Of course meron ding graduate sa abroad pero for sure they charge a lot.
As for Marikina/San Mateo dental practitioner who has training in surgery, you can try Dr. Michelle Aman in Marikina. She trained in PGH. You can email me at clarencedentalclinic@gmail.com for her contact details. Will ask around for other surgical practitioners in the said area.

ask ko lang may clinic po ba kayo?! mas comfortable po kasi ako kapag babae kasi pag lalaki nahihiya ako sa teeh ko. mukang kailangan ko na ng dentures. un mga pinastahan sa teeth ko nag ccrack na then un jacket natanggal na din. magkano po kaya bunot tas pa denture? saka gano katagal bago ikabit un dentures? nakaka hiya naman kasi kung bungi ako lalo na this christmas hahaha!

BHS pertains to the pre-dentistry program. Hindi pa siya specific dental subjects but more on GE or General Education subjects which is taken on the first 2 years of the Dentistry course.

Ano po ang mga gamit na kailangang bilhin ng first year dent proper student?
I’m not familiar with the subjects in other dental schools but in our college, first year dental proper covers Oral Anatomy, Dental Materials, etc. Para sa Oral Anatomy, kailangan mo ng mga wax carvers — nabibili ito sa mga dental stores. Mura lang naman ang mga ito dahil local lang ang kailangan mo. Kailangan mo din ng mga plaster bowls, spatula, etc. para sa dental materials. I’m sure magbibigay naman ng listahan ang prof ninyo.

i am a licensed dentist..i am not into clinical practice for 13 years now..i wanted to try to teach in a dental school…can you give some experiences you had in teaching dental students? i dont have experience in teaching in large groups, im just used to teaching my son for his elementary lessons..
can you also suggest dental schools that i can apply? do you know any openings for instructors in any dental schools? i live here in manila..thank you so much for your help..
Maybe you can try in the school where you graduated from. I don’t know with other dental schools but in our case, the school has a committee which “scouts” for alumni who can teach.

Doc T, gusto ko po sanang ikonsulta yung ngipin ng anak ko (she’s 3yrs
old). nagkaroon ng aksidente sa bahay namin at nadapa sya. tumama yung nguso nya sa hagdan at nabali yung isang front tooth nya. though, nagpunta na kami sa dentist (not pediatric dentist) and they cleared my daughter. they did not touch the gums dahil fresh pa daw yung sugat at umiiyak ang anak ko. traumatic daw sa bata. but they checked the loose tooth at sabi buo naman daw yung ngipin na nakuha ko. they gave antibiotics and analgesic for the swelling. so far, normal naman po ang anak ko at hindi nalagnat. parang walang nangyari.
i’m worried na baka may naiwang ngipin (yung kaputol ba, kahit maliit) and it may cause infection. i want to send some photos thru your email, if possible. Thank you for your response, Doc T! mabuhay ka!
Mas maganda sana kung magpa-xray sa area kung saan natanggalan ng ngipin ang anak nyo. Sa ganoong paraan, makikita yung may natira na ngipin sa ilalim ng gilagid. Pero very rare na matatanggal ng buo ang ngipin after a fall unless sobrang lakas ng impact ng pagkakabangga at hindi bali ngunit na-knock out lang yung ngipin mula sa pagkakabaon nito sa buto.
Maari naman po kayo magsend sa akin ng picture pero mas mainam talaga muna na makunan ng x-ray ang anak ninyo.

Ipa-xray mo yung area na binunutan. Baka may naiwan na parte ng ngipin.

Kung wala kang lagnat, I don’t suggest taking antibiotics without being seen by a dentist.
Kung impacted yang ngipin mo, nagre-range from 4000 up (depende sa lugar ng clinic at sa expertise ng gagawa) ang procedure.

Doc may tanong po ako. Yung mga dental schools na nabanggit nyo,tumatanggap din ba sila ng root canal therapy? Isa pa pala, nagpa-pasta po kasi ako noon tapos sabi malaki daw yung part na kaylangang pastahan, so yun, pinapastahan ko. Then after 2 mos. nung nag chewing gum ako natanggal. Nung bumalik ako sa dentist, kaylangan na daw ipa- root canal. Naisip ko mahal yun. Lumipat ako sa ibang dentista and pinastahan lang nya. Ngayon yung part ng ipin ko, sumasakit. Kaylangan ko na ba talagang ipa-root canal yun?

Doc, gusto ko po magpaconsult sa isang bihasang dentista para makapag-advise sa akin ano ang dapat na gawin sa aking ngipin. Hindi po ako masyado conscoius sa aking dental health dati pero ngayon narealize ko na importante sya sa buhay natin. Gusto ko din po i-correct un disalignment sa ngipin ko. Tama po ba na una akong bumisata sa orthodentist (UP College of Dentistry grad School) before general dentist? Dpat na po ba ako magpa dental x-ray prior to my visit sa aking denstista? Maari itong pagmulan ng infection. Mas maganda na ipasuri ito sa isang dentista at ipa-x-ray din ang area na pinagbunutan.
